The consultants who choose Scott-Moncrieff & Associates Ltd have a wealth of specialist experience built over many years working on matters that genuinely matter.
Peter Garsden is one of those lawyers.
Peter has spent decades representing survivors of abuse and advising on some of the most difficult and sensitive cases to come before the courts and public inquiries since the 1990s, including work linked to major investigations into abuse within children’s homes across the North West and North Wales.
Peter was recently invited to share his thoughts on Talk TV about the newly announced terms of reference for the Grooming Gangs Inquiry, headed by Baroness Ann Longfield. He began to think about the effectiveness of public inquiries and how beneficial they were/are to the victims/survivors of abuse.
He believes that Public Inquiries can play an important role in giving survivors a voice, uncovering lessons, and making recommendations for change, supported by legal powers to compel evidence and witnesses. However, experience shows that recommendations are often not implemented, and inquiries can also reopen painful emotions for survivors. While inquiries should continue, there is a strong case for the government to be legally required to act on their recommendations.
Peter is one of the most respected figures in his field, and his views are measured, thoughtful, and rooted in practice. He understands the importance of listening to survivors, ensuring accountability, and making sure recommendations lead to meaningful action rather than simply becoming another report on a shelf.
At Scott-Moncrieff, we are proud to have consultants like Peter. Our model allows highly experienced lawyers to continue practising with independence and purpose, while giving clients access to exceptional expertise when they need it most.
Peter’s longstanding commitment to this area of law is something we are very proud to recognise.
