The medical records
In every medical case we try to obtain all records that are relevant. Sometimes this will consist of more than one set of records. For instance, your treatment might have been carried out at more than one hospital and of course, you will also have had treatment from your GP.
Once we have the records we extract the relevant passages. Sometimes a set of records can run to thousands of pieces of paper – our largest was a set with 17,000 pages! So this process is often like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack because the detail that informs your claim might only be described in just a few of those thousands of pages. But we must read them all to find the relevant parts.
Assessing the case
We are not doctors, but those of us who manage medical cases invariably learn a lot of medical terminology and gain a passable knowledge of the workings of the human body and physiology. Sometimes it is quite easy to see where treatment went wrong. On other occasions it involves unbelievable complexity. Most Scott-Moncrieff lawyers have close ties with clinicians who give informal advice at the start of a case.
